Community Action

Climate Capsule @ Historic Hampton House

As part of Miami Climate Week 2026, the Climate Capsule at the Historic Hampton House will convene community leaders, advocates, and researchers to examine how climate resilience planning can better protect vulnerable communities, including people with disabilities and residents facing climate-driven displacement.

The morning program, “Extreme Heat, Flooding & Hurricanes — Building a Disability Accessible Climate Resilience Plan for Miami,” hosted by the Advocacy Network on Disabilities, will focus on expanding engagement with disability communities and integrating accessibility into Miami’s climate preparedness strategies. The conversation will bring together disability advocates, emergency management officials, public health experts, and environmental partners to share actionable preparedness guidance and strengthen collaboration across sectors. Leaders including Irenaida Diaz and Carlos Kaiser will participate in the discussion.

At noon, the program will shift to a second panel: “Climate Migration & Displacement“.

Moderated by U Miami’s Dr Kilan Bishop, panelists will explore why “high ground” is increasingly becoming a luxury, the human rights consequences of climate-driven relocation, and what policies and planning strategies are needed to ensure communities are protected and supported when relocation becomes necessary. The conversation will feature Dr. Marcie Washington of FIU’s Commons for Justice and Dr. Erica Bower of Human Rights Watch (via ZOOM), who will share insights on the intersection of climate change, housing, and human rights along with Statewide Organizer Neuteyshe Felizor for the ACLU who will explore climate implications on gerrymandering and voting rights.
